Wichita has been an All America City not once, not twice, but three
times since 1962. This ought to tell you something about our community!
The prestigious award recognizes civic excellence in communities where
citizens, business, volunteers and government work together to address
critical local issues. Being an All America City means understanding
theneed for grassroots involvement and consensus-based decision-making.
What makes Wichita an All America City? We have schools with high
standards and six years of rising test scores, good recreation,
surprisingly high quality amenities, a low crime rate, a good culture
and great people! You’ll fit right in with a city of strong,
entrepreneurial individuals, where the business climate is prosperous
and unemployment is consistently below the national average.
Wichita maintains strong Midwestern values while becoming more diverse
all the time. Our city is not only safe, outgoing and inclusive, it is a
center of technology in industries ranging from heavy manufacturing to
medical research to telecommunications centers.
Aviation accounts for a tremendous share of this technology. More
general aviation aircraft, nearly 70%, are manufactured in the “Air
Capital of the World” than anywhere else in the country. In 2001,
Wichita was selected as the first American city ever to be awarded the
Quality Center Award by Aviation Week & Space Technology magazine. We
are proud of our skills and commitment to excellence in Wichita.
If a technology-based economy is the beginning of Wichita’s quality of
life, community spirit is its fullest expression. Just look at the
revitalization of Wichita’s downtown area, specifically the Old Town
District, to see this spirit coming to life each day! And then there’s
Exploration Place, Wichita’s newest attraction and a gem in the Midwest.
This science and interactive learning center is like no other place in
the country, and was made possible by an extraordinary public-private
community partnership!
Wichita’s strong spirit of community asserts itself most noticeably in
neighborhoods. In Riverside and College Hill, in Midtown and other
neighborhoods surrounding Wichita’s revitalized downtown, as well as in
the rapidly growing suburbs, there is community response to challenges
and opportunities alike. Thanks to partnerships between
area law enforcement personnel and the area’s nearly 100 neighborhood
watch organizations, the area’s rate of violent crime is 50% below the
average for cities of comparable size, and fully 31% below it’s 1992
level!
Not only are our neighborhoods safe, but they’re affordable, too! Our
overall cost of living is below the national average. Wichita’s median
existing home sale price is consisitently one-third lower than the
national figure!
The Wichita Area Chamber of Commerce has assembled a wealth of

education system, our low commute time of 17 minutes (the lowest of 64
cities studied with 250,000 or more residents), the expertise of our
