Retirement is almost always a robust time
of life in Wichita, and the city has responded with innovative schemes
of senior involvement in the life of the community. The development
of senior communities attuned to active lifestyles has further expanded
retired people’s choices for enjoyment and continued contribution
to the community.
Wichita’s active seniors share their
enthusiasm and their talents in a variety of programs that bring them
together with their peers and with younger people in need of the wisdom
and the experience that is theirs. The Retired Senior Volunteer Program,
for example, guides seniors into community projects and specialized
volunteer work where their talents can do the most good. |
The Good Neighbor Nutrition Program delivers
healthful meals to seniors. The Senior Companion Program enables seniors
to help other seniors one-on-one, a program that begins with a stipend but
often grows to a friendship.
The Sedgwick County Department on Aging connects
people age 60 and older with the social service agency or volunteer organization
appropriate to their interests or concerns. Wichita’s Senior Services operates
four different senior centers, the Meals on Wheels program, a service for
locating paid employment for seniors, a grocery shopping and delivery service,
respite care, peer counseling, specialized programs for the families of
people with Alzheimer’s disease, a long list of referral services for needs
of all kinds and more opportunities for volunteerism than the most imaginative
senior could envision.
To be sure, the occasions for personal enrichment
are as diverse as those for serving others. Underwritten by the Kansas Health
Foundation, the East Side Shepherd’s Center brings seniors together to help,
learn from and enjoy each other. Seniors teach classes in what they know
best — whether it’s accounting, macramé, watercolor painting or nine-ball
pool.
