Wichita's Hospitals [ go back ]

In a typical year more babies are born at Wichita’s Wesley Medical Center, 550 N. Hillside, than at any other hospital in Kansas. A free-standing BirthCare Center has 20 birthing suites. Wesley’s Center for Reproductive Medicine provides quality care to prenatal, neonatal, obstetric and gynecological patients.

The Center includes a newborn intensive care unit of 35 beds. Other Wesley ICUs are located in pediatrics (16 beds), surgery (16 beds), medicine (25 beds) and coronary care (19 beds).

Wesley maintains a Level I trauma center (the highest possible level of certification). Wesley also operates Lifewatch air/ground ambulances. Other specialties at Wesley include oncology, orthopedics (more than 400 full joint replacements annually), peritoneal medicine and hemodialysis, cardiovascular medicine, pulmonary function, and diagnostics including diagnostic radiology, neurodiagnostics and a sleep disorders center. Wesley is a teaching hospital with residencies in anesthesia, family practice, internal medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, orthopedics, pediatrics, radiology and surgery. The medical center is fully accredited for continuing professional education.

Health Strategies, located next to Wesley, is a wellness center that combines sports medicine and nutritional counseling with a huge fitness facility containing an indoor track and pool, aerobics areas, circuit training equipment and child care rooms.

Medical education in Wichita revolves around the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita and its clinics throughout the city. Staffed by physicians of the Medical Practice Association and medical students and residents under their direct supervision, the clinics deliver a full range of health care services. Most patients are seen at the Patient Care Center at the medical school’s campus at 1010 N. Kansas St.

Other sites staffed by the medical school’s faculty include family practice clinics at Via Christi-St. Joseph, pediatrics and family practice clinics at Via Christi-St. Francis, and a family practice clinic at Wesley Medical Center.

The University of Kansas School of Medicine is home to several major clinical research programs: the Via Christi Research Institute, the Orthopedic Research Institute and the Psychiatric Research Institute.

At the Wichita VA Medical and Regional Office Center (VAM&ROC), veterans receive highly specialized medical care. The VAM&ROC is the largest of eight such centers within the Department of Veterans Affairs. This 81-bed acute-care medical center serves more than 106,000 veterans from 51 Kansas counties. Services include treatments for such needs as visual impairment, ambulatory day surgery, substance abuse, post-traumatic stress disorder and critical care. The VAM&ROC is located at 5500 E. Kellogg Dr.

A research facility and prosthetic / orthotic laboratory complement the clinical components of the VAM&ROC. The center’s research component is studying diabetes, the role of dietary supplements in colon cancer, chemotherapy, AIDS, infertility and experimental drug therapy for various disorders.

A large campus atmosphere that houses two distinctly different organizations under the same roof, Galichia Medical Group and Galichia Heart Hospital - Wichita's newest free-standing heart facility - provides a patient friendly atmosphere along with the latest in patient diagnostics, care and technology. The Galichia Medical Group, PA (Gmed), is a multi-specialty practice that provides cardiology services to 19 cities across the state of Kansas. Wichita-based, the group consists of 36 practitioners specializing in cardiology, nuclear cardiology, electrophysiology, internal medicine, vascular medicine, gastroenterology, cardiothoracic surgery, family practice, geriatrics and endocrinology. The Galichia Heart Hospital (Gheart), one of the most advanced centers for the study and treatment of heart disease, opened in December 2001. The dedication to ongoing improvement - both in patient satisfaction and quality of medical care - is sure to remain a hallmark of Gheart and Gmed as they continue to grow.

Kansas Heart Hospital, 3601 N. Webb Rd., is defining what is possible in heart healthcare in America. A comprehensive heart healthcare facility, the hospital applies every human resource and superior technology to give patients the best care possible. The Kansas Heart Hospital is a 43-bed subspecialty hospital providing dedicated cardiovascular thoracic care. The hospital serves patients from diagnosis through medical and surgical treatment on to rehabilitation, where both patient and family learn the preventive measures and lifestyle changes for a healthier tomorrow.

Wichita Specialty Hospital is a 26-bed sub-acute facility. Interdisciplinary teams provide a variety of treatment and rehabilitation programs for patients with medically complex care needs. With skilled nursing and Alzheimer’s units, Wichita Specialty Hospital offers specialized care for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, infectious diseases, multiple sclerosis and muscular dystrophy.
