Wichita has long been recognized as
a regional center for health care, its hospitals and
clinics delivering highly specialized services to
complement acute and primary care. As medicine
continues its rapid technical evolution, and as
patterns of service delivery change, Wichita’s
health providers are assuming ever greater roles in
serving patients from all over Kansas and from
adjacent states as well.

Via Christi
Regional Medical Center
is part of the Via
Christi Health System, the region’s largest
and most comprehensive not-for-profit
health-care organization. It has two
acute-care campuses, Via Christi-St. Francis
at 929 N. St. Francis and Via Christi-St.
Joseph at 3600 E. Harry, which collectively
have 1,532 licensed beds and more than 800
physicians on staff. Its Good Shepherd
Campus, which opened in 2000, is the area’s
lone provider of inpatient behavioral health
services. |
In addition to full-service Emergency
Departments on both its acute-care campuses, Via
Christi offers a comprehensive array of
critical-care services including the region’s only
Burn Center and its largest — and only — American
College of Surgeons—verified Level I Trauma Center
for Adults and Children. In addition, it has
medical, surgical, cardiac, pediatric, Level III
neonatal intensive care units — and currently is
adding obstetrical and neuro ICUs to further round
out its complement of maternal-fetal and
neuroscience services (which already includes
comprehensive stroke and epilepsy centers).
Via Christi has state-of-the-art cancer and
heart centers, diabetes care, sports medicine and
rehabilitation as well as the region’s only tissue,
organ and bone marrow transplant programs. The
freestanding Via Christi Cancer Center, which
features a public resource center, offers the most
advanced radiation therapy technologies,
chemotherapy and bone marrow/stem cell transplants.
The Via Christi Heart Center provides a full range
of diagnostic and treatment services, including the
state’s only heart transplant program outside of the
Kansas City metro area.
Its St. Joseph campus features a year-old
NewLife Center that combines the amenities of a
freestanding birthing center with the added security
and technology of a hospital, while its St. Francis
campus is home to the new Grant and Norma Davis
ChildLife Center, a pediatric center with 27 private
rooms and a host of other family-focused amenities.
In addition, the Medical Center is home to
several major clinical research programs: the Via
Christi Research Institute, the Orthopedic Research
Institute and the Psychiatric Research Institute.
Via Christi’s Wichita entities also includes
Via Christi Riverside Medical Center, a separately
licensed facility located just west of the Arkansas
River at 2622 W. Central. Purchased Oct. 1, 2001 Via
Christi Riverside is an osteopathic teaching
hospital founded in 1924. Licensed for 125 beds, Via
Christi-Riverside offers emergency, medical-surgical

Medical education in Wichita revolves around
the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita
and its clinics throughout the city. Staffed by
physicians of the Medical Practice Association and
medical students and residents under their direct
supervision, the clinics deliver a full range of
health care services. Most patients are seen at the
Patient Care Center at the medical school’s campus
at 1010 N. Kansas St.
Other sites staffed by the medical school’s
faculty include family practice clinics at Via
Christi-St. Joseph, pediatrics and family practice
clinics at Via Christi-St. Francis, and a family
practice clinic at Wesley Medical Center.
