Higher and Continuing Education
|
|
The university
that now bears the city’s name was founded
in 1895 as Fairmount College by the
Congregational Church. It became the first
municipal university west of the Mississippi
River in 1926 when its charter passed to the
City of Wichita. Today,
Wichita State
University
is a flourishing public university of 15,000
students, and the only metropolitan
university in the state system of higher
education overseen by the Kansas State Board
of Regents.
|
WSU is a true urban
university whose mission is to meet
the educational, social, cultural
and business needs of Kansas’
largest city. The faculty is
exceptional. About 90 percent of all
professors and instructors have
doctoral or terminal degrees. The
full-time faculty numbers about 479,
with approximately 41 additional
teachers serving in a part-time
capacity. Together, they make for a
student-to-faculty ratio of 29 to 1. |
 |
The curriculum is rich in offerings,
with 60 degree programs in more than 200
areas of study in six undergraduate colleges
(arts and sciences, engineering, fine arts,
education, business and health professions)
and four associate’s degree programs. The
graduate school offers 44 master’s degrees,
10 doctoral programs and three specialist
degree programs in more than 100 areas of
study. The WSU campus, located approximately
three miles northeast of downtown Wichita,
spreads over more than 330 acres with 65
buildings for higher learning. Nearly 70
outdoor sculptures adorn the campus with a
collection that is one of the finest of its
types in the country.
The university has taken its programs
and services to the community at large
through outreach centers located in
downtown, west and south Wichita. The
downtown center, located at 127 North
Market, brings credit classes and workshops
scheduled on weekends and evenings, as well
as during the day, to the business
community. The center also offers contract
training services, non-credit seminars,
customized computer training and free
informational programs.

Friends
University
is a comprehensive liberal arts institution
founded in 1898. It continues to provide a
welcoming Christian environment for students
of all ages. Today, Friends is the largest,
fastest-growing independent university in
Kansas, with an enrollment of approximately
2,800 students. This outstanding growth is
due in part to academic programs of quality
and substance, to experienced faculty
committed to personal attention for every
student and to innovative programs that meet
the needs of students.
 |
Friends is organized into three
colleges: arts and sciences,
business, and continuing education.
The university offers one
associate’s degree program, 46
bachelor’s degree programs and nine
master’s degree programs. In
addition to four-year traditional
undergraduate programs, Friends has
created several accelerated
degree-completion programs to help
working adults finish degree
requirements while maintaining
full-time employment. In fact, just
52 to 63 weeks of study - combined
with previous college credits and
applicable work experience - can
lead to the degree completion. These
programs embrace human resource
management, computer information
systems, total quality management,
business management and criminal
justice, and new this year,
e-commerce management. |
As its name implies, Friends
University’s heritage is Quaker. The
university’s mission calls for serving
people of all denominations. In the 1930s,
governance of the institution was vested in
an independent board of trustees. The
university continues to operate in an
amicable but independent relationship with
the Society of Friends.

Newman
University
was founded in 1933 as a Catholic two-year
teacher’s academy. Newman is now a four-year
coeducational liberal arts university in the
academic tradition of Cardinal John Henry
Newman. Cardinal Newman emphasized the
liberal arts steadied by the influence of
Christian values.
|
The university awards six
associate’s degrees, 27 bachelor’s
degrees, pre-professional degrees in
seven academic areas, and four
master’s degree programs. These
degrees come in five broad academic
divisions: business and computer
information systems; education;
humanities and social science;
nursing and science, mathematics and
allied health. More than 2,000
students are enrolled at Newman
University, representing 24 states
and 12 foreign countries. They are
taught by 80 full-time and 200
part-time faculty members. Student
faculty ratio is 14:1, with an
average class size of 13 students. |
