Volunteerism
|
 |
Wichita is a city run by volunteers. Volunteerism
drives most of the organizations that give Wichita its
distinctive flair, its quality of life and sense of
community.
Consider the Wichita River Festival, the state’s
biggest celebration, held each year in May. Tens of
thousands of volunteered hours make the festival
possible. Consider the hospitals in the city. Volunteers
work alongside employees in tending to the needs of
patients.
Look for the lists of local companies in newspaper
ads promoting runs, walks, wine tastings, dances,
concerts, bike tours and the hundreds of other events on
the city’s calendar.
People helping people is readily apparent
everywhere: the shut-in elderly and adults who can’t
read, the needy at holiday time and children who don’t
know how to swim. If you have time and energy and
ability to share, Wichita will reward your generosity
with dozens of options for service and with the
satisfaction that comes from giving.
Following are just a few examples of Wichita
organizations that truly have this community spirit.
-
United Way of the Plains
-
Rainbows United
-
United Methodist Youthville
-
The Salvation Army
